Needle Felting
Needle felting is fun. Who doesn't love being able to make something by stabbing repeatedly with a rather lethal-looking needle? Even if you are new to felting you can make something fantastic. Cuffs, beads, animals, hats, purses... pretty much anything you can imagine. My personal favorite is making what I call "CozyCritters". They are cute and useful and anyone can make on with a few supplies, some imagination, and a chunk of time. Warning: Needle felting needles are sharp and barbed. They HURT! Try not to stab yourself. To make a CozyCritter you will need: 1 sock rice thread about 4 oz total of variations of colors of roving. I use alpaca. Wool is great too. Rubber Foam mat Felting needles (a variation is good. I suggest a "clover" tool) 1) Fill the sock with rice up to the ankle area. 2) Sew shut securely. I use the zigzag on my sewing machine and go back and forth several times. You can cute the rest of the sock off or cut it in half and shape it into bunny ears. 3) Wrap your background roving around your sock and stab through all over the sock, resting it on the rubber foam to protect your table or lap, or whatever. You will want four layers of roving, alternating fiber direction. After one layer is bound to the sock you can "tap" instead of stabbing. Make sure you do not bend or twist the needles, but move the straight, or they may break off. Also- be careful not to stab yourself! 4) Once the roving is smooth and secure all over the sock you can form arms legs, ears, and eyes out of the other shades of roving. You do not need glue to attach these-- just use your needles at an angle and felt them to your sock in the appropriate places. 5) Smooth over your project by lots of tapping. You can also finish it by putting a little dish soap in warm water and rubbing it over with your fingers inside a sandwich bag. All finished! You should have your own adorable little creature and, hopefully, no bloody fingers to show for it! |
